Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation( PM&R) or Physiatry is a quality of life medical specialty. It is dedicated to restoring optimal function to people with illness or injuries. Physiatrists ( fizz ee a’ trists) are specialists who diagnose problems and offer non-surgical management of pain and injury. Physiatrists treat people, not just symptoms, by evaluating the impact of a condition on the person – medically, socially, emotionally and vocationally.
Physiatrists specialize in three major areas of medical care:-
- Diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and pain syndromes
- Rehabilitation of patients with severe impairments, i.e. stroke, Brain injury, Cerebral palsy, Spinal Cord Injury, etc.
- Electrodiagnostic Medicine: Evaluation and testing of nerve and muscle disease or injury.
